Somalia, Ethiopian Troops Capture Key Al-Shabaab stronghold Bases

BUR-HAKABO, Somalia (Keydmedia) - A coalition of Ethiopian troops and soldiers loyal to the weak U.N.-backed Transitional Federal Government (TFG) in Somalia have captured strategic bases from Al-Shabaab rebel fighters, Keydmedia reports citing officials and witnesses said on Friday.

The reports said the southern towns Bur-Hakabo and Qansah-Dhere in Bay region were taken early on Friday without a fight and resistance as Al-Shabaab fighters had fled before a heavily armed convoy of Ethiopian troops and pro-government forces entered the towns.
Bur-Hakabo and Qansah-dhere districts in Bay province have been serving as key command and control base for militants in the region for the past three years. The towns are located along a key route leading to other towns controlled by Al-Shabaab militants, and their capture is expected to open the way to other nearby areas.
“The towns are now tense as Somalia and Ethiopian troops are searching houses,” a resident told Keydmedia English News by telephone.
Somalia has been without a strong functioning Government since the fall of Dictator Mohamed Siad Barre’s government in 1991. Currently, the weak U.N.-backed interim government set up in 2004 is trying to enforce its authority in Somalia.
