LAS ANOD — Ethiopian federal troops have replaced policemen in the border town of Buhoodle, after reports emerged that the officers were destabilizing the region.
The Ethiopian army removed hundreds of Liyuu policemen under the command of the President of Somali State of Ethiopia Abdi Mohamoud Omar from the Ethiopian side of Buhoodle this week. Addis Ababa made the move after it discovered the Liyuu police which is mainly former ethnic Ogaden ONLF rebel group were supporting tribal militants opposed to Somaliland in Buhoodle region. The Somaliland army reportedly captured a dozen of Liyuu policemen fighting for the separatist Sool, Sanaag and Ceyn (SSC) group on clan affiliation bases.
The Interior Minister of Somaliland Mohamed Nur recently met with Hailemariam Desalegn, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia to discuss the issue with him. The Ethiopian government which signed security agreement with Somaliland in 2005 agreed to take action against those involved in destabilizing the region.
Somaliland has complained about the administration of Abdi Mohamud Omar and said its patients was running out and urged Addis Ababa to take immediate action. Mr Omar has been engaged in a low profile ethnic war against Somali clans in the Somali State of Ethiopia in particular the Isaaq clan. The Isaaq clan have long expressed their dislike for the ONLF and now that the state police are mainly former ONLF fighters, they in the process of a hidden revenge war using Ethiopian government resources. Ever since Mr Omar came to power in the Somali State of Ethiopia, tensions between Somaliland and the State have been escalating. The Liyuu police killed dozens of Isaaq civilians in towns bordering Somaliland and across the Somali State of Ethiopia as well as looting trucks.
